The number of inhabitants has increased in the recent years and on 1 January 2009, the number of registered inhabitants sumed up to 2.469 people, of which 1.926 are concentrating in the town of Sort. The next most populated centre of population is Llessui, at the head of the Valley of Àssua, with 115 inhabitants, and the least populated is Castellviny, in the Bailiwick, with only 3 inhabitants.

255 people live in the villages of the Valley of Àssua and 288, in the villages of the Bailiwick.

The population density is set on the present moment around 23,5 inhabitants/km2.

Second homes and tourist lodgings have resulted in a seasonal population, which multiplies by three the number of inhabitants living here for most of the year.
